A Serving Heart

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
— Mark 10:45

Jesus declared that He came to serve.

Let the impact of that sink in.

The One who spoke worlds into existence, who parted the water from the land, and breathed the breath of life into mankind, came to the earth to minister to the very beings He created.

In Mark 10, two of Jesus's disciples were asking to sit next to Him in all His glory. To be exalted above the rest. But, Jesus said, "Can you drink the cup that I drink?"

They had no idea that the cross would come before the crown.

As fallen human beings we can be exceedingly selfish. We want to experience the glory without the sacrifice. The crown without the cross. We praise God when times are great, but just like the disciples abandoned Jesus at the cross, we complain and deny Him when the going gets tough.

Jesus as our example, The Great I Am, spent His life on this planet in service to others. Even choosing to lay down His life on our behalf.

Do we deserve better than He? He came to give us pardon and life more abundantly. But, He also gave us a commission- to reflect His character of love with a heart of service. To give as we receive.

To Ponder:

How may I be more serving like Jesus?

Father God,

Put a heart of service within me. Help me not to want to shine my own light, but to reflect Yours. May my life always glorify You and draw others to You. Fill me with Your overflowing love and give me the heart of Jesus.
