Are You A Hummingbird Or Buzzard?

He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
— Proverbs 11:27

A buzzard flies around looking for dead things. A hummingbird flies around looking for something sweet.

Both find what they are looking for. What does this have to do with relationships?

We often find/see what we are looking for. It is easy to see and point out the worst, the dirt in someone else. But, do we see the gold?

The Amplified Bible puts it this way,

"He who diligently seeks good seeks favor and grace, But he who seeks evil, evil will come to him."

There are a couple of lessons for us here...

First, we need to be careful who we hang out with and who we give the most of our time and energy to. We become like the people we spend the most time around, so let's seek the good whenever we can.

Second, within the relationships we do have in our lives we can search for the best traits. Sometimes, we don't let people change. They do something wrong and we call that out. We seek and find that quality over and over again. But, what are the best qualities we see in our friends and loved ones? Do we call those out? Do we let them know how much good we see and appreciate in them?

Let us not be like the buzzard looking for the worst, the dead end of things. Let's be like the hummingbird seeking and calling out the sweet nectar in those we love. And watch as they transform into more of the best.

Let us seek the good in our work, in our lives, and in our relationships.

To Ponder:

Am I acting like a hummingbird or buzzard? What am I searching for and finding?

Prayer:

Lord,

Help me to seek and find the good that is all around me. To focus on the positive that I see to be filled with hope and keep my eyes, most importantly, towards You. Help me to look for the best in those I meet. Not seeing the outward only, but the heart. To see You in them and express Your love for them.

Help me surround myself with those that will draw me closer to You. But, to seek and find the lost and bring them to You, as well. Calling out the greatness in them that You can see. May I see the gold and focus on that. Open the eyes of my Heart Lord. Help me to search and see as You do.

Amen
