Awake And Arise
Have you ever had the experience where you arrive home and are completely unaware of the trip, of how you got there? You were driving on autopilot.
Scary isn't it!
You were not physically asleep, but unaware of your surroundings consciously. Your mind was elsewhere.
Paul is advising us to wake up! We can become so unaware of our lives going through the day to day motions that we become spiritually dead. Never in the history of our world has there been so many distractions as today. Focusing and staying present is a challenge. But, it is an effort we must make to stay spiritually alive.
Christ is the light of the world and if we do not make an effort to diligently keep our minds on Him, we can slip into darkness. Verse 15 and 16 tell us to walk circumspectly redeeming the time. The latin word "circumspicere" means "to look around." It implies being careful to avoid mistakes and their negative consequences.
Throughout the epistles, Paul warns churches to wake up. As Christ followers today we can be in church and still be asleep. When things appear good is when we can be most tempted to sleep. When we have so many conveniences we can get too relaxed and become less diligent.
While it is wonderful to experience good times and be content in all circumstances, we can stay aware by reading God's Word, praying, and remembering all the times we have seen Him move in our lives, no matter our current conditions.
Whether you are going through an extra difficult trial or experiencing a lull, wake up. Bask in The Light.
How can I be more present and awake with my life today both physically and spiritually?
Sometimes I get too comfortable and become unaware. I'm ready to wake up. I want a revival of Your Light and Presence in my life. I want spiritual eyes to see. I want to stay present with You. To recognize all Your goodness. To be present with my family and friends. To arise.
Help me. Open my eyes.
In Jesus' name amen.
