Encouraging Yourself In The Lord

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
— 1 Samuel 30:6

David had every right to be afraid and discouraged. Things had gone from bad to worse. And now he was in fear for his very life. But notice the last part...David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

We cannot always wait around for someone to encourage us. Sometimes you have to encourage yourself. Sometimes you have to go before God, bask in His presence, and remember His greatness.

When you are on edge and feel like giving up, God says come. Encourage yourself in Me. David had displeased God and yet, God in His great mercy was still ready to receive him. Satan is there ready to accuse and send us into a state of distress. But, the Lord is waiting for us to repent and encourage ourselves in Him. To get back up and on the right path.

But, we must recognize what is happening and step back from it to see God's grace. When we do this, we gain stronger and stronger faith for the next battle.

We can encourage ourselves in the Lord through prayer and Bible study, casting our burdens and shortcomings on our Redeemer. Discouragement happens to us all. But, let's not waste time there. The next time the enemy brings us the feelings of depression and defeat, may we go to the Lord who lifts up our heads.

To Ponder:

How can I encourage myself in the Lord today?

Prayer:

Lord,

Teach me to encourage myself in You. Not to expect something from others that only You can give. You are my life's hope. I put my trust in You. I will encourage myself in You and rise again as Your child. Thank You

Amen
