Forgiveness Abounds Where Grace Abounds

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
— Romans 5:8

While we were yet sinners...

Christ gave His life for us, the ultimate sacrifice. He didn't wait for us to get it together, to ask for forgiveness, or even to realize our need for it. He gave before, without the assurance that we would ever accept such a gift.

That's grace.

With all that forgiveness over us, how can we not forgive others? Do we wait for them to say they are sorry? Do we wait for them to make some kind of major atonement where we feel justified?

Our hearts are not as pure as Jesus' heart, but because we have received so much grace, we are called to pass it on. Relationships require forgiveness. Sometimes in little ways and sometimes in big. But, Christ never asks us to do more than He did. Each of our sins, no matter how big or small they may seem, put Jesus on that cross. There is no small sin.

Let us not be as the unmerciful servant of Matthew 18:21-35 who was forgiven much yet would not forgive little.

Christ is our example.

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32

To Ponder:

Is there a grievance I've been holding onto that I need to let go of now?

Becuase I have been given so much grace, Your word says that I must forgive in order to be forgiven. Any grievances I have against my fellow brothers and sisters, I lay them at your feet now Lord. I don't want to cling to my pride anymore. Sometimes my heart is hardened, Lord. I need you to soften it towards those that I feel have wronged me.

The only way I can let go is by You working to transform my heart. Help me be a loving forgiver so that I may rest under the shelter of Your merciful grace forever. Help me forgive.
