God Is Love

He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
— 1 John 4:8

Love is the greatest of these. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

But, how do we know what real love looks like?

The word "love" gets thrown around flippantly in our modern world to the point that it sometimes loses its true meaning and deep purpose. We "love" everything from our significant other to tacos.

So, what is love...really?

The Bible tells us that God is love. Not God is "like" love, but it is what He is. If we want to know what real love is we can search all through the Word of God to find His characteristics.

We, of course, can love in different ways and to different degrees. But, God is love in its deepest and purest form. Our love is based on emotions. It ebbs and flows. But, God's love is consistent, persistent, and unconditional.

As you read the Bible begin to look for God's characteristics aka what love is. For example, John 3:16 shows us that love is sacrificial. 1 John 4:9-10 tells us that God loved us before we loved Him. There is that unconditional aspect.

We may never fully understand the complete depth of God's love, but it is worth the life-long effort to learn as much of it as we can through God's Word and through the life of His Son Jesus. It changes us into His image. (Be beholding 2 Corinthians 3:18)

And, doesn't the world need more love?

To Ponder:

How can I learn more about God as Love and about God's love?

Father God,

The world sometimes does not see You as Love. You have been so misrepresented. Change me into Your love so that I may be an example for You. An honest representation of Your love to the world.

Help me to see the attributes of Your true love and character as I read and study Your Word. Give me the words to speak to express Your love to others and the courage to act always with love. May people see You As Love through me.
