Overcome Evil With Good

Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
— Romans 12:21

Payback. Revenge.

Defined as- "The action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands."

It is tempting when we have been hurt by someone to want to hurt them back or rejoice when they reap what they sow. But, God says vengeance is Mine. He says to overcome evil with good. To bless those who curse you.

Paul expounds upon this in Romans quite a bit, so let's allow the Word of God to speak,

"Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:14-21

We're even called to care for our enemies. It sounds hard if you truly have someone you are struggling with. But, the Lord says there in that passage that He will take care of it. Trying to take matters into our own hands can get us in a lot of trouble.

And we do not want to sow seeds of vengeance, for we will then be the ones to reap a harvest we do not want. Let us pray for a spirit of love that can rise up above. You never know, God could turn an enemy into your closest friend.

Let's leave vengeance to His more than capable and much wiser hands.

To Ponder:

Is there someone I am holding with contempt in my heart? Maybe it is time to let go and let God. How can I overcome evil with good?

Heavenly Father,

I give all my enemies and all my adversaries of frustration over to You. You are far wiser to handle them than I. Forgive me for holding contempt in my heart as I have in the past. I release all my frustrations with people to You now Father. Teach me how to overcome evil with good and to spread your love even when I don't feel like it.

May I forgive as I am forgiven. Thank You, Father.
