Provision Day By Day

Give us this day our daily bread.
— Matthew 6:11

Jesus taught us to lift up this simple request to our Heavenly Father. He didn't make prayer complicated.

Asking for our daily bread is not just about physical nourishment, but can encompass anything we need for everyday life. Physical, spiritual, and emotional sustenance. When God rained down manna from heaven, he provided the Israelites what they needed for the day at hand. No more, no less. If they tried to hoard more, the manna would spoil and smell. It would go to waste.

How much of our time and energy do we waste worrying about what tomorrow will bring? God's grace is sufficient for today. It will be sufficient for tomorrow too. He has already been in our tomorrow and will give what we need when we get there if we ask Him. One day at a time.

We cannot handle more than that and do not need to. Luke puts it this way,

"Give us day by day our daily bread."

Living tomorrow's potential trials and challenges in our minds' today complicates life and steals the lessons, joy, and peace that God has for us today. One day at a time. One step at a time.

We serve a God who not only created our world but also walked it before us. He knows what all our human needs are and He is waiting ready to supply them. May we not complicate that grace worrying if and when tomorrow's manna will come.

To Ponder:

Am I trying to hoard manna because I do not have faith in God to provide for my tomorrow?

Prayer:

Father God,

Teach me to trust You day by day. To know that You have been in my tomorrow and know my needs. To request sustenance one day at a time that I may not allow anything You provide to me go to waste. May I use it all and be ready to be filled again each new day.

In Jesus' name amen.
