Set A Watch Before My Mouth

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
— Psalm 141:3

Have you ever been determined to go through the day speaking only positive things, praising God, but then there you are listening to complaints slip right through your lips?

Apparently, King David also struggled with his words. He asked the Lord to set watch on his mouth. We would be wise to pray the same.

We all say things we regret. Our words are important. They shape our thoughts and our emotions. But, we often speak out of habit, from patterns that we have ingrained. Breaking the cycle can be hard. But, through Christ, we can. We can ask the Lord to be the keeper or our words and thoughts for they bring about our actions.

Maybe we have put away what is considered worldly language, but still, speak words of discouragement and despair. This does not help build our faith. The way we speak to ourselves and others can grow us in a positive direction or drown us in negativity.

James 3:3-8 lets us know that the tongue is hard to control,

"But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison." verse 8

We cannot control it on our own, but we have help. May we pray daily, Set a watch O Lord on my mouth.

To Ponder:

Who has control of what comes from my mouth? Will I give it to the Lord?

Father God,

Be the keeper of my lips. Purify my heart for from it come my words. Guard my lips that I will speak uplifting words from You standing strong in faith. May I set You before my eyes always as my example and strengthen myself in You.

In Jesus' name amen.
