The Heart of The Matter

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
— Matthew 22:37

Jesus calls us to love Him with every part of our being. To give Him first place in our lives. To bring our actions, emotions, and thoughts under His control.

All of God's commandments come down to two instructions- Love God and love others.

When we love God and put Him first place in our lives, we are able to love others better. God is love. Through Him we learn love. Love is the fulfillment of the law. Through love we honor God. This is the greatest commandment because if we do and understand this one we will also be obedient to the others. Obedience through love is a far better experience than obedience through obligation or even worse- fear.

Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees who had lost sight of the heart of the matter. They were keeping the law through external observance and pride, not from a heart of love. This makes the law drudgery. If we fail to have a personal experience with God, our law keeping can become the same. An obligation and struggle.

But, when we love the Lord, we know His law is love and obedience become much easier with the help of the Holy Spirit. We put God's will above our own and seek to align ours to His. We become empowered and filled.

We receive love and naturally give from the overflow.

To Ponder:

Am I obedient through love or obligation? If the latter, how may I change that experience?

Prayer:

Father God,

I want to put You first. I want to love You with all my heart, soul, and mind. I want to obey through love, not tradition, pride, or obligation. Give me a heart after Yours. One of love that I will serve You faithfully and others. May I put love in action.

In Jesus Name, Amen.
